Discover South Gate

South Gate is a suburban residential community located just south and east of downtown Sarasota, Florida. With approximately 7,000 residents, South Gate offers a family-friendly small-town feel in close proximity to the art, history, and culture of downtown Sarasota, as well as the award-winning beaches of Siesta Key. Due to its ideal location, housing prices in South Gate have skyrocketed over the last few years, quickly shifting the community’s demographic to well-off families.

Philippi Creek runs through the heart of South Gate, and Philippi Estate Park sits on its banks, as does the South Gate Community Center. Philippi Estate Park is a 60-acre park with hiking trails, grassy fields, wildlife, and the historic Edson Keith Mansion. The Edson Keith Mansion is a gorgeous Mediterranean style home surrounded by manicured gardens and gazebos, and is a popular place for weddings. Philippi Estate Park facilities can be rented for events, celebrations, and festivals. The South Gate Community Center includes a historic mid-century building designed by Victor Lundy of the Sarasota School of Architecture, a large swimming pool, and canoe or kayak access to Philippi creek. Membership in the community center is optional to all residents, and quite affordable.

South Gate has many top-rated public schools, as well as a few private schools, making it a wonderful community to raise a family. There is also a great deal of shopping and dining right in South Gate, including multiple retail plazas, two shopping malls, and eateries with fare ranging from pub food, to Italian, to Mexican, to fine-dining. The homes in the area were built in the 1960s, and most of them are one-story.
